Curriculum: A weekly learning theme is presented and supported by one or two storybooks that relate to the theme. Lessons are planned based on the theme and books. Theme books are read daily. Toys are rotated regularly. Lessons foster language, cognitive, social/emotional, and fine and gross motor growth and development. Lessons are offered in a developmentally appropriate, play-based manner and can be adapted for a variety of ages. Children's interests play a role in activity planning.
Social and Emotional Development: I believe that social/emotional is the cornerstone of the early years and the most important "work" of early childhood. Children are encouraged and directly supported in developing age-appropriate problem solving skills. Opportunities for growth in this area are woven into our experiences together through teachable moments, adult and peer modeling, celebrating safe behaviors, supporting individuality, and practicing respect for others.
Program Garden: Children who are interested will work in a garden on the premises. Activities in the garden include planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting. Activities vary by season. Food that is harvested will be served during care. The purpose of the garden is to provide children with a hands-on experience to learn where food comes from and to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. The garden also allows learning opportunities in all developmental domains, and provides a sense of community, contribution, and an opportunity to practice teamwork.
Behavior Supports: I place a focus on emphasizing positive behavior, providing choices, and offering redirection. Children will be celebrated for making safe choices. Most importantly, children will be encouraged and directly supported in developing age-appropriate problem solving skills. I keep an ongoing dialog with families regarding their child's social and emotional development and collaborate to allow for consistency between expectations in care and at home.
Supporting Transitions: To support successful transitions to other childcare settings, preschool, or kindergarten I will be readily available to collaborate in whatever capacity is requested by your family at that time. I am willing to speak with individuals at the new setting, share information, and also work to partner with you to prepare your child for the transition. Some things may include transition days, visiting the new setting, or discussions and planning for the new setting with your child. Additionally, I will provide school district school of choice and preschool or kindergarten registration dates as they pertain to your family.
Community Resources: We are fortunate to live in a community that hosts a variety of agencies and programs aimed at supporting children and families. In my professional role as a community resource specialist I have become familiar with many resources available to families within our community. I have also worked with many of these resource agencies in the past. If I know of a resource that may be beneficial to your family, I will share that information with you. I also welcome you to ask if there is something you are looking for or anything I may help you with.
